On 12 April 1937 Frank Whittle became the first person to successfully start and run a turbojet engine. In may 1941 the engine took to the air in an experimental Gloster-Whittle aircraft, but despite the RAF's desperate need for air supremacy over her enemies, little support was forthcoming from the military establishment. It was the enthusiasm of the American General 'Hap' Arnold that took the next stage of development to the USA and within six months Whittle's invention was powering more American Jets than British.
This is the story of the genius throttled by British government bureaucracy, for even when in 1943 Rolls-Royce became involved with the successful design and manufacture of engines based on Whittle's concepts, his company was nationalised and banned from engine production! Although gagged for decades by the secrecy of that period, the story can now be told in full and these revelations provide a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the wartime government and military establishment, attitudes that led to one of the greatest inventions of all time being offered freely to those who were to become Britain's main aircraft manufacturing competitors.
This book was previously known as "Genesis of the Jet Frank Whittle and the invention of the Jet Engine. As part of this new release we have included a supplement by Ian Whittle and a copy of the patents submitted in Germany by Sir Frank Whittle back in 1932.

JET Frank Whittle and the Invention of the Jet Engine eBook John Golley

I absolutely enjoyed this book from beginning to end, it highlights all the trials and tribulations Sir Frank Whittle endured to bring his dream to fruition. Most of us take for granted that marvellous piece of engineering known as the jet engine, this book gives you some insight into the failures and the triumphs of the jet engine while in its infancy. It also highlights Sir Frank's unending desire to see his "baby" succeed.

JET Frank Whittle and the Invention of the Jet Engine eBook John Golley Reviews

My grandfather read this and really enjoyed the information on the history and creation of the Jet engine.
When you read this book it is incredible that he was able to develop the jet engine with all the obstacles put in his way by the British government. That Frank Whittle was a brilliant engineer developing concepts for all the major advances in jet technology is not in doubt. A good read for anyone interested in aviation history.
A good read. Very informative.
This is not casual reading. But if you are an aeronautical engineer you'll love it. Pages of technical information with numbers and test results.
another excellent book, better than expected.
Are you interested in British politics during WWII? How about corporate intrigue? Do you like exclamation points (lots & lots & lots of them!!!!!)? If so, you'll love this book. On the other hand, maybe you're interested in jet engine technology. That is what I was looking for. You'll find only the barest smattering of that in this book. If that's what you're looking for, then consider Nicholas Cumpsty or Bill Gunston.
What an incredible story. Whittle is truly a man to be admired. Through his brains, courage and determination he raised himself from a working class beginning, to someone internationally renowned for his accomplishments. This was in the face of relentless obstacles and opposition from government bureaucrats and industry "experts" who thought they knew better, but were proven wrong. Most people would have given up in the face of such opposition. The world was given a new technology and industry because of Whittle. The U.K. Government gave the technology free of charge to America. I can only think that this was in gratitude for American participation in WW2.
